Oh Star, oh poor poor poor Star Jones Reynolds. To be honest I don't know what to say about this scandalous View drama that is going on (but I'll find something). As I've mentioned before, I regularly watch the View, its like a drug addiction, you know its horrible but yet its hard to resist. Watching (the once) four women bitterly trample and trip over each other in an desperate effort to kiss Barbara Walters behind, as they simultaneously behave like untrained, spoiled, self-righteous brats, is very amusing, often leaving me feeling better about myself for never being so desperate for attention.
A few weeks ago I enjoyed a little chuckle when Meredith read from an article where the Dixie Chicks talked about not going on the View because great artist like Bruce Springsteen would never show their face on that show (very true). It was kind of hypocritical because the DC's had gone on the show many years ago, they even showed a clip of them happily singin there songs, (of course that was before they became famous when no one else wanted to hear their yodeling. Not that yodeling is bad.). But I can't blame the Chicks, I'd rather be a hypocrite then show my face on that rag fest. Well now that Rosie is on I may eat those words (I like my Rosie).
Anyway back to Mrs. Jones Reynolds. On Monday I was watching the show and immediately I noticed Star's bizarre behavior, (I looked over at my mom and said somethings up). Barbara, Joy and the blond survivor chick, were passionately discussing topics (as usual) but instead of Star's usual opinionated contribution, she sat there barely looking up from the table, hands clasped, jaw locked in a grimace. She reminded me of when you're mad at someone (friends, boyfriends etc) but they don't really give a shit, so rather then spit it out you sit there sulking trying to create as much tension as possible so that if your not happy, no one is happy. Well Star tried her best but the other three refused to give in. So on Tuesday she went for the sucker punch, announcing on the show that she would not be returning this fall. Joy, Barbara W and the blond chick's mouth dropped in shock. Walter says, "We didn’t expect her to make this statement yesterday. She gave us no warning."
Apparently Star's husband found out from her agent months ago that they were not planning to renew her contract. So for a while now Star knew that her time there was over and with with the announcement of Rosie as the new co-host in fall, Star began hinting (on Entertainment Tonight and other shows) that she felt that that was the shows way of guaranteeing that she would not want to return (Rosie and Star have an ongoing feud over Star's weight loss mystery (I'm on Rosie's side). Rosie has stated that she thinks Star is dishonest by not being forthright regarding how she truly lost a bulk of the weight. I guess now there won't be the much buzzed about showdown between Rosie and Star this fall.
Anyway, Barbara W and the network was under the belief that Star would go gently into the night, by basically lying about her reasons for leaving, according to Walters "Reynolds could say whatever she wanted to about why she was leaving, and we would back her up. We gave her time to look for another job and hoped that she would announce it on this program and leave with dignity," explained Walters. "But Star made another choice." What's interesting is that is now clear to everyone that the View had no intention of bring Star back for the 10th season and this was understood for months now, but just a month ago I saw Walters on ET saying that she hoped Star would decide to return to the View in fall. I wonder if this was just Walters playing the old PR game?
Yes indeed, Star's choice was to call everyone out on national Television and in this weeks People mag (I love People Magazine. Wish I had the money to subscribe again). An infuriated B.W. announced Wednesday morning that Star would not be returning to finish her last few weeks on the show. Star later stated that she found out that morning through her agents who told her she was no longer welcomed on the show. Wow, is all I gotta say.
This is one of the most real dramas I've seen for a while in good ole La La land. I guess the PR people could not stop these dragons from blowing fire at each other (well seeing them host the show proves that not even a wrestler stapling their mouths shut would keep these ladies quiet). I frankly question if any of the women on that show are nice people. They all seem cut throat to me so I'm not surprised that this has happened. Star for one has lorded her fame for years, from requesting sponsors to load her wedding down with expensive goodie bags, and then having the nerve to plug her wedding sponsors on the show, to her constant bragging about her husband (I won't go there) and her dog and her new body, she's overbearing and not that nice. The others Meredith, Joy, and I can't remember the other girls name (to lazy to look it up) all seem self-centered, self-righteous and a tad conniving. It's ironic that these women who claim to be empowered women speaking for the world of women are so catty, and insincere.
My opinion is that both sides got what they deserved Walters couldn't paint a pretty PR picture over the drama, she herself said, "It is becoming uncomfortable for us to pretend that everything is the same at this table." Star (along with Joy) who many believe was behind some of the prior dramas with previous View hosts finally has to eat some humble pie. Not to mention her treatment of one of my favorite celebs Kathy Griffin, Griffin has stated that Star played a part in her getting booted off red carpet coverage for E. A few weeks ago Meredith left the show after a teary eyed one hour tribute to her. Today Star is told not to return and her face is already removed from the show credits. One day your a daytime star bragging about your perfect life, next day you're a has been (sounds like Kathy Lee Gifford. Huh...)
I will say Star is recognized as an incredible well educated attorney and it must have been tough being the only woman of color sitting alongside a group of women who looked at you crazy if you mentioned topics that did not go along with their blue eyed/blond idea of perfect America. But does that excuse the superiority vibe she gives off and the negative reputation she's earned because of it? No, not to me.
BTW: Rumor has it that Gayle (Oprahs' BFF, "Best Friends Forever" ) may be taking over Star's position on the show. With Rosie and Gayle, the View may actually become a program one can respect rather then disdain.
