Brave New Voices, RuPaul's Drag-race...Great TV!

I just watched the finale of the HBO series, Russell Simmons presents-Brave New Voices. It was a documentary, narrated by Queen Latifah, showcasing talented young spoken word poets from all over the U.S. 500 youths divided into over 45 teams compete in this wonderful competition.

Now I'm normally not a fan of spoken word. I've had too many experiences where I found myself stuck in a small dark cafe somewhere, listening to over indulgent earth mothers waxing about,"I'm the sun and he's the moon," in breathy over enunciated voices. But I became captivated by this series because it was authentic, no posing, and cliche poems about love. These kids tackled everything from police violence, food addictions, self-esteem issues, to break-ups, and disabilities.

My favorite teams were Philly, Chicago, New York, and San Francisco but they were all so good. Some poems brought tears to my eyes. I am currently a jury member for the Toronto Deaf and Arts Film Festival and after immersing myself in films by deaf filmmakers, addressing deaf issues, I have become very sensitive to the hurdles they face in a hearing society. In one of the poems a young man apologizes to his deaf sister for never learning sign language, he ends it by saying, "Tamara, I am sorry for my silence." He signs the last sentence and I found it so powerful. Two girls on the Philly team performed a wonderful poem about a youth who is trans-gendered. It was brave and raw and real. I have a lesbian character in the novel I am working on now that is dealing with some issues of trans-gender, and I love that it is being openly and sincerely spoken about without shame. Another young man from the New York team did a moving poem called, Queen, that blew me away. I have to say I am jealous of these kids. How wonderful it would have been for me, when I was a teenage writer, to be around other young and spectacular writers that could have encouraged me, push me, criticize me, and help me become better. They are light years ahead of where I was at that age. Wow. I would love to be a judge for the Brave New Voices competition one day in the future. I'm putting that out in the universe.

Another TV enjoyment of mine is RuPaul's Drag race. It's a competition for America's Next op Drag Queen, and what a competition it is.

I grew up with Rupaul and have always enjoyed his look and attitude. I find Rupaul a gorgeous mix of a little Vanessa William, a teensy bit of Vivica Fox, and everything else is completely unique.

Some of my favorite parts of the show is the clever phrases he's created. For instance, "Chante u stay," which he says to the girls left in the competition or "Sashay away," to the one voted out.  The theme song  is so catchy, it goes, "Cover girl put your face in your walk. Head to toe let your whole body talk." The bottom two women at the end of each episode must, lip-sync for their lives. It is really entertaining watching these over the top ladies sing to Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. They take Diva to the max, weirdly enough you realize how over the top Mariah Carey already is. At the end of the day all the women are vying to be the, "Last Queen standing."

Now my absolute favorite is Shannel (Bottom row, left hand corner of pic). She has killer eyes, style, and a absolute gorgeous face and body in drag, better looking than when she looks like a man. There is something so wonderful about her that I wish she could adopt me, be the dad I've never had. But I have a feeling she's not going to win. I think Rupaul and the judges find her too cocky, no pun intended, and not vulnerable enough.

This week the drag queens got paired up with real women, girl fighters, who were so butch that the drag queens looked petrified for a moment. The drag queens had to take their little butch babies and make them over into little versions of themselves. It was so cute. My Shannel got the butch-est woman of all but made her look fabulous. It was amazing. So I'm cheering her on and all the women. Watching the show makes you really appreciate what an art form and tribute to women drag really is.

As Rupaul says, "May The Best Woman Win"...Go Shannel!!!

Keeping Up with the Kardashians? I think I'll pass...

Okay, I've never apologized for loving reality shows. I watch reality shows or old episodes of Sex and the City, Seinfeld, and Family Guy, everyday. I've also recently gotten into game shows. But I think I've finally found a reality show that is so pointless and exploitative for the mere desire for fame that I can't stomach it.

Keeping up with the Kardashians is a reality show about the Kardashian/Jenner family. Kris Jenner, ex wife to O.J. Simpson attorney, the late Robert Kardashian, married Bruce Jenner in the 90’s. Ryan Seacrest, who appears quite stuffy to me, is ironically the producer of the show.  The show primarily revolves around Kim, known for her gorgeous looks and sex tapes, Kourtney, the oldest and shortest bombshell of the sisters, and Khloe, the tallest and youngest of the Kardashian group. Bruce Jenner has six children from a previous relationship. They appear on the show periodically. On the show I saw tonight it was Brody Jenner who made an appearance.

I was never really interested in watching it but Kim seems sweet in the interviews so I decided to give the show a chance. I had actually been watching Kimora Lee Simmons show, which I never thought I would like but I really enjoy and the Kardashian show came right after.  I was too lazy to change the channel because my Millionaires club comes on at 1pm so I just left it on. The first few episodes I saw over the last few weeks initially left me with a dull feeling that has now become a mild disgust. All I have to say is after watching about 4 or 5 episodes of this show I think this family has some strange dynamics. Besides being one of the most pointless and boring reality shows on the TV, it feels like watching the kernels of a V.C. Andrews novel coming to life right before your eyes.  

A few weeks ago I actually decided not to watch the show again, after the littlest daughters, Kendall and Kylie were happily shown mixing cocktails and doing a little pole dance shimmy for Pussy Cat Doll's  founder, Robin Antin,  and Kim, who seemed mighty impressed, I thought this is not for me. Their parents intervened but in a lack luster way that almost condoned the behavior. Unfortunately, today, again I was too lazy to turn the channel and I found myself watching it again.

Kim, Khloe, Kourtney and their mother Kris had gone to Puerto Vallarta to pose for a swimsuit spread. They made sure not to tell Bruce Jenner about the spread. He apparently is a bit prudish. If you're not into the sex tapes in this family, you're kinda a stick in the mud. Not surprisingly, he finds out about the sexy shoot and angrily decides to head up there to stop it. His 20-something year old son, Brody, just happened to be there, oh yeah he also just happened to tell his father about the shoot too. Oops. Bruce reluctantly leaves him to watch his little sisters as he rushes out. Brody is quickly overwhelmed, but rather than call a female friend of his to come and save him, he calls his 20 something year old manager to come by the house. And, oh, I forgot, this was after the two girls were trying to tie him onto the stripper pole in their parent’s room. Don’t worry folks he fought off those little tigers, running happily as they whipped him with a belt.

 During this wild fun time his creepy  manger arrives, grinning like a Cheshire cat (of course he's surprised when he arrives) and inquire's, "Where the chicks? 

Brody laughs, "Here they are." Referring to his little sisters. 

On cue the girl's proceed to chase his manger around with the belt. How sweet.

Later one of the girl's inquires about what the "ladies" do on the Girl's Gone Wild videos. Why she asked this question is beyond me because she proceeds to lift her top up and down flashing her belly button, clearly showing that for 10 or 11 she knows all too well what those girl's are about. The cameras turn even more predatory at this point, following the little girls as they flash. Brody tells them that they better stop flashing and talking about GGW or they'll be grounded. I actually became scared for a moment until I saw him smiling and relaxed as he said it, reassuring me that he was only saying it to look like the responsible older brother on camera kind of like what their parents do. What a relief. 

Meanwhile, Bruce has made it to the photo shoot just in time to catch it in progress, (isn't Reality TV time like soooo perfect!). The four K's, caught in mid pose are shocked. I guess nobody warned them.  We return to the home just in time to see the two youngest sisters, now in their parents room, dancing around the stripper pole. I must say, for like pre-teens, they're pretty good. Brody's manager is holding a video camera, grinning as he says, "I should manage you guys. I’m going to put this on You Tube.” While the girls chirp, “Girls gone wild. Girl's gone wild,” as they flash their belly buttons and swing around. If you want to know the video recorder was conveniently found in an armoire right beside their parents stripper pole so the girl's didn't have to venture far from home to put on the show. But what I want to know is, doesn't this so called manger realize the Internet is already overwhelmed with naked little girl's doing things that older men encourage them to do for their personal and financial enjoyment? It's just a little thing called child pornography. But hey that's for another episode, on you tube of course. Does anyone else see at least one of these little girl's following in their older sister's proud sex tape tradition? I think I do. Watch out Kim...

Finally, Brody finds them. He stands at the entrance of the bedroom door apparently “appalled." I mean appalled, he almost had both hands on his face in that scared, "Home Alone," expression from the movie posters.

Literally, the only one who appears to have a kernel of normalcy is Bruce and as if sensing something strange happening at home he says, “It’s nice to be here in Puerto Vallarta but I can’t help about think about what’s going on in the house.” At the end of the show they show Bruce watching the video tape of his two daughters playfully slithering around the stripper pole. He looks sincerely shocked.

“I’m going to kill Brody,” says Kris, again "appalled." A second later the trailer for the next episode shows Kim’ taking up an offer to pose in playboy, saying, “I’m not comfortable taking my top off,” she says to her mother, who is also her manger.

Just another day in the crazy cute sleazy lives of the Kardashians. Sorry Kim, you may be pretty and sweet but not worth that trash TV.

HBO Grey Gardens-Drew Barrymore is brilliant!

I've wanted to see the documentary Grey Gardens for about two years now but never got a chance. I did some reading up on it and was so fascinated by the stories of this eccentric mother, Edith "Big Edie" Beale and daughter, Edith "little Edie" Beale, Aunt and cousin to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, that I made a tiny reference to it in my recently finished book.

At my last job a stylish little woman came into the store to look for a swimsuit. She didn't buy a suit but she stayed for over an hour telling me and my co-worker stories. She had been an extra on the HBO film set of Grey Gardens, which was taped in Toronto and said it was a fascinating tale. Since then I have been eagerly awaiting for its release date. Finally it was coming out. Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lang were making the promotional route, appearing on talk shows and late night shows. I thought it was coming out in the theater but I was very disappointed when I realized it was coming out on HBO. I don't have HBO, at least I didn't. I was so determined to see this movie that my sister and I ordered the channel yesterday (now we're stuck with a 3 month commitment).

Anyway, it was worth it. Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lang were both incredible. But Barrymore embodied the character so authentically that when you watch the documentary (which aired right after the movie) you feel like you are still watching Barrymore not the real Little Edie for the first  minutes of it. There was something so powerful about seeing the film and the doc right after. You go from fantasy to the reality and by the end you feel fully immersed in their world as if you know them. Barrymore had to do a lot of intense convincing to even get the part. She has become known for her cute light romantic comedies and no one was convinced that she had the ability or the depth to bring this woman to life. On Ellen she spoke about pleading with the director for a chance, just someone to believe in her, and to his credit he became that person. To prepare for the role she lived as they did for three months. No Tv, no cell, no Internet, and absolutely no contact with her friends and family. She also studied for months to perfect Little Edie's speech, facial expressions, and outlandish dance moves. The studying paid off. Barrymore deserves an Emmy for this role and as someone on a message board said tonight it should have been in cinemas and she would have gotten an Oscar, hands down.

Big and little Edie were beautiful wild socialites for many years but by the seventies it was discovered that they were living in their dilapidated house, over run by cats, a raccoon who they fed cat food and wonder bread, and garbage. After the city planned to condemn their home Jackie Kennedy stepped in (along with her sister to save the home). Shortly after they were approached to take part in the doc regarding their lives. It has been a cult classic ever since.

I've always been drawn to eccentricity and eccentric people. Not the manufactured eccentricity you see with some people but the true unselfconscious raw eccentricity, which both women had. I found little Edie fascinating. I understood her a bit too. In the documentary you saw how beautiful they had both been in their youth. Even at 79 and 56 both women were still attractive even after living in such squalor. Little Edie had a girlish sex appeal and an incredible way with fashion. I love scarves and own many, both the scarves worn in the film and some worn by the real's life little Edie were so beautiful that I wish I could buy them now. I kept asking myself where are they getting the clothes, since they barely left the house. After the film's release Little Edie became a fashion icon.

Big Edie died in 1977 and Little Edie sold the house to a famous journalist in 1979 under the condition that he would not tear down the house. It has been restored and remains today. Little Edie went on to live in New York, Montreal and California and died in 2002. After seeing their documentary I can see why their story has lived on and on...I have been left feeling enriched by entering these to ladies world.

So You Think You Can Dance: Lacking diversity?

One of my favorite shows each summer is, So You Think You Can Dance, I have watched it from the first season and think it is fabulous. Besides writing, music and dance are my passions (not that I dance often but I love to watch it). But over the years I have noticed that there is a startling lack of diversity in the show, especially during the audition period. To begin with the fact that the judges, and choreographers on the show are primarily white, (Go onto the webpage and take a peak at the bio's you will see what I mean), this is surprising since dance, especially in America, is an art form that African Americans and Latinos have been some of the most influential in, Debbie Allen, Alvin Ailey Dance Academy, FAME, I'm going to live forever anyone?

Then show after show, the auditions aired are white dancers, Asian hip hoppers and ball room dancers. When the odd black dancer is shown they are often break dancers, B-boys and 98 percent of the time black men. Well, I take that back today's episode did show one black woman who Nigel Lythgoe said looked like "a bored stripper," which she did but I bet not all of the black female dancers did (but we'll never know will we). Where are the black female dancers, and Latino dancers both men and women? Why do they continually show black and Latin dancers as one-dimensional performers? When in places like New York these dancers are phenomenal. Go see Rent, Chicago and you will see dancers of color who can do it all not just turn on their heads.

What is interesting is that the same producers behind So You Think You Can Dance are also behind American Idle which I believe does a good job showing diverse singers, the good, bad and the ugly so why this is lacking here is surprising. And we all know that the performers shown during auditions get a head start building a fan base, therefore, the editing which seems to be completely neglecting dancers of color are doing a disservice, which I can assure puts them at a disadvantage.

It is these subtle ways that people are relegated to the sidelines due to race and gender that I notice, sadly, all the time. I will continue watching the show but I am disappointed in this pattern and hope the producers do better in the future for all the artists they are proposing to support.

Celebs and Fat Suits

Big egos, er...I mean experiments

I am nauseated by the recent trend of skinny gorgeous celebs and journalists donning fat suits in order to "investigate" the depressing experiences of "poor fat people". It is increasingly becoming one of the most hypocritical and offensive media experiments.

The most recent offenders have been Vanessa Minnillo (of Entertainment Tonight) and Tyra Banks (The Tyra show). Both spent hours being made over into obese women, wearing fat suits that added hundreds of pounds onto their svelte frames, and slathering on make-up that made them look more odd (almost non human) rather then actual chubby faced women. While I understand the initial interest and even relevance of these experiments I now find it tacky and self congratulatory. I will give it to Minnillo she maintained pretty much the same personality both in and out of the suit. Compared to others who noticeably round their shoulders and walk with their head down, as if they are not only expecting to be treated badly but instigating it (because of course drama makes for better TV). But these experiments are no longer helpful and reinforce beliefs that every fat woman is scorned, treated badly or insecure and sad. This is not true. Furthermore, these programs never acknowledge that the make-up is rarely natural looking. Even a baby, who has no personal bias towards weight, would be taken aback at the site of these half human half Halloween masks plastered on their faces.

And I don't understand why they can't wear 100 pound fat suits rather then 350 pound fat suits? But then I remind myself that media is all about "going big or going home" (no pun intended). So why go for a realistic fat suit (that actually reflects most of the overweight women in the world) when you can go with the supper shocking Jerry springer style fat suit? It's like breast implants I guess, go big baby, or go home!

Maybe I've just been out of the loop. Can someone tell me when disguising oneself as another segment of the population, of which you do not belong, became acceptable again? I thought that was circa 88 style television. It reminds me of when I was a kid and watched talk shows and News specials where "well-meaning" white journalist would get made up to look black and then "bravely" march out into the world only to come back with horror stories about how badly their own community treated the other community. Even as a child I felt nauseated rather then inspired me.

I'm most annoyed at the end of the show when celebs release themselves from the fat suits, glowing triumphantly (back in their "acceptable" bodies), now a little wiser and filled with compassion for those poor miserable "fatties" out there who can not simply step out of a costume and lead normal lives. Walking in someone else's shoes never looked so righteous or felt so convenient.

A the end of a recent recap of the experiment, Vanessa stands with an audience and urges the viewers that, "we all need to work together to get a compassion and understanding for larger people". I wanted to laugh. Are "larger people" new to the planet or something? Are larger people not human? I have friends who have been 250 pounds, lost weight, and went back up, they still felt like the same people I loved. I didn't spend time thinking about how I could develop compassion and  a better understanding towards them because I look at the woman (thighs and all) and beyond the weight, beyond the hair color, beyond the incidentals that change and do not make them who they are (as I expect them to do for me), the friend, not the pounds. We talk about weight issues, love issues and life issues. That is friendship, that is respect. No salacious 5 minute experiment can teach us that.

Note: After witnessing this so called "must see TV" I begin to wonder if us skinny gal's had to fight for basic respect and acceptance back in the days when the fuller figured girls were in style? Maybe they'll come a day when skinny girls and big girls live in magazine and media harmony.

American Idol tops itself

American Idol...how do you do it?

Last night I was too busy to watch American Idol but since I am loyal to my pookie Simon, I taped it and watched it this morning. Is it only me or did last nights episode rank as one of the most hilarious ever? I have not seen this kind of unique, authentic, ridiculousness since the first season when we were all naive to how clueless and crazy people can really be.

So I have put together a little list of some of last nights best moments.

SAMMY-Contestant 67572

Sammy had a flare and "Rawness" as he put it that really caught my attention. Though his voice sucked, as expected, he did have a strange kind of star quality about him. I think he would actually make a good looking woman, and boy could he work a cape and runway like I haven't seen since Mrs. J, from America's Next Top Model.

Fantasia's cousin had the nerve to come onto the show, tell them he was her cousin, and then proceed to sing like a person being strangled. It just reminds me that once you are famous all those little family members you never knew existed (or wish didn't) come out of the wood work using your name to promote themselves and you have no control over it. In this case I bet Fantasia wishes she had.

CACHET-Contestant 61871

Besides Whitney Houston, there have been few people with the vocal ability to sing legendary Chaka Khan's songs to the same soulful and stunning degree. But few have sung Chaka so excruciatingly bad as the following contestant. The award for the biggest butchery of a Chaka Khan song goes to, drum roll please, Cachet (a.k.a shower singer) whose rendition of, "I'm every woman," was so horrible that it was unrecognizable.

Poor sweet clueless Seth. Seth's Micheal Jackson tribute was both earnest, sad, and amusing. I felt a little pang of guilt as I watched his well rehearsed, childlike audition. You could see that he really loves to dance, and really loves Micheal Jackson but alas he just did not have what it takes. But I will say his MJ tippy toe move thingy was pretty good.

Speaking to one contestant who claimed she sang like Faith Hill. "You are more Jerry Springer show then American Idol...".

"Here's your baby". As he walked a reluctant Paula Abdul to Steven-contestant 60531 who went on to slow dance with Paula as he sang Marvin Gaye's, "Lets Get It On".

Closing comments.

I hate these attention craving goofs who come in with props, (like the dummy, or the science board) it spells cheese, stinky cheese at that. But what I hate even more are those who audition in uniform. I find it manipulative watching someone auditioning in their police uniform or fireman's jump suit, its inappropriate, not professional and begs for special treatment. What a lot of contestants fail to realize, is that talent speaks for itself. When you are truly talented you don't need gimmicks. Humility and genuineness is all you need to walk in the door with, then sing your head off and blow us all away. That's talent!

Fierce, Fabulous, Badass Roller Queens

I've recently become a big fan of the the A & E reality show Roller Girls. It is a fascinating look into the world of the Female Roller Derby and the real lives behind these athletes. The first thing that drew me in was the amazing play on names. There's Venis Envy, Catalac, Jackie O'Nasty, Punky Bruiser, Miss Conduct, Sister Mary Jane (No pain, No Jane), Jail Bait, Cherry Chainsaw, Eva Knievel, Cha Cha, Witch Baby, and Hades Lady. I was so amazed out how clever the names were that I kept writing down one after the other, each one becoming my new favorite. The images the women have created are fierce. It's a a mixture of punk meets cowgirl princess, meets pop/rock, all authentic and unapologetic.

Though there are a bunch of teams (like the Cherry Bombers) the show mainly focuses on members from The Holly Rollers, Hell Cats and Rhinestone Cowgirls.

What interest me most about the show is the way it explores female competitive sports, sexuality, image and relationships. I love how these girls are challenging the idea that women can't be tough and sexy or loyal and competitive. These women are some of the most competitive, fearless athletes I've ever seen. Their very aggressive without adopting masculine persona's. They all consciously toy with image and sexuality in an empowering way and have adopted cheeky, saucy and provocative images that captivate the audience without undermining the sport. Therefore, it is not surprising that a large percentage of their fan base are men, but because they are incredible athletes and ferocious competitors it has also ushered in a strong fan base of women and young girls.

There's even Roller girl lingo. Below are a few examples, (which I pulled off the official website, http://www.aetv.com/rollergirls/index.jsp).

Blood and Thunder:  Practice drill in which all skaters take the track and proceed to knock the hell out of each other until only one skater remains standing.

Whiney Rhineys:  What happens when you play dirty and lose anyway.

Pull a Chola:  Starting a drunken bar fight with two ugly guys. (Chola is one of the Roller Girls)

Jammer:  Scoring skater position designated by star on her helmet.  Her objective is to score one point per opposing blocker she laps.

Clawing/Swimming:  A jammer pulling her way through a tough pack.

But the show is more then their competitive lives but also their personal lives. Sister Mary Jane is a teacher by day and Lux is a nurse. Cha Cha and Cadalac are mothers. All the women try to balance the lives they love with the sport that drives them.

It's so interesting to watch the dynamics between each group and within each group. The power struggles are numerous one example was that of Hades Lady (one of the captains of Hell Cats) who tries to prevent Clownsnack (one of the founding members of Hellcats) from returning to the league. Though Hades Lady attempts to appear as if she is trying to be fair and adhere to the newly structured league rules, many believe it is due to a incident that occurred  a year prior when Clownsnack had accidentally punched Hades Lady in the eye during a competition. Though Clownsnack has had a reputation of being unreliable and flaky she is well respected within the league and many of the girls, from all sides, go on a "legalize Clownsnack" protest, which ultimately works. After a second try out Clownsnack is reinstated on the Hell Cats. These women though competitors are also business women who give each other the due respect and band together to bring their dream of a women's paid professional Roller Derby league to reality.

Watching the show makes you want to become one of these powerful, ultra sexy, superb athletes on wheels. My sister and I started trying to think of names and images that might be good for future Roller Girls. How about Ice Pic, or Fire starter, Blade assassin or Whip Stash? I've decided that my roller girl image would be sexy pinup vixen meets ruthless god father (I mean mother) on blades. Yeah, that sounds good. Real good.

American Idol and my Simon Cowell

Oh, those crazy kids...

I love Kathy Griffin she is one of the most hilarious women on the planet. I especially like Griffin's quote (which is my quote of the day) because she is exactly right and American Idol is the prime example of that.

I am a reality show junkie and I refuse to be shamed. One of my favorites is of course American Idol and that sly sexy fox Simon Cowell. Some may scorn me but I laugh in the face of their scorn. American idol and my tyrant are my special little treats.

There was a time when I actually enjoyed a certain filthy cheap talk show (which I shall not give the honor of naming on my blog). I enjoyed watching cheating lovers, transsexuals, baby mamas and trailer trash battle it out in front of a ravaged salivating audience chanting them on. But I do have my limits and I could no longer support the demoralizing levels of humiliation and depravity, so now I watch American Idol. It's like having all the flavor without the calories.

The past two nights my family and I have shared many laughs, some tears, and as usual felt a little better about ourselves after witnessing the skeptical of talent auditioning to be on the show. Simon has been in rare vicious form but can you blame the guy?

From the cocky singers who proclaim that they are the next Whitney Houston's and Christina Aguilera's, then let loose a voice that sounds like drowning turkey's, to the boring cheesy gimmicky people who come prancing in bad costumes and sing just as bad, I am always amazed at how clueless some people are. I always ask myself, don't these people have family and friends who love them enough to be honest? And then I feel a little sad at the thought that maybe they don't. I would never let someone I cared about march out onto national television without at least saying, "Hey, you know I love you and you are good at so many things but I don't think this is for you". If they insisted I would support them. If they actually made it I would say "hey I was wrong," but I would always be honest.

Then contestant 4358 walked into the room. Contestant 4358- a truly L.A. 16 year old added a new dimension to where these clueless contestants come from. She was the oddest Christina Aguilera wannabe I had seen in a long time. She strutted into the audition room with the misguided confidence of Paris Hilton.
