Maya Angelou tribute to Michael Jackson

We Had Him-By Maya Angelou for Michael Jackson

Beloveds, now we know that we know nothing, now that our bright and shining star can slip away from our fingertips like a puff of summer wind.

Without notice, our dear love can escape our doting embrace. Sing our songs among the stars and walk our dances across the face of the moon.

In the instant that Michael is gone, we know nothing. No clocks can tell time. No oceans can rush our tides with the abrupt absence of our treasure.

Though we are many, each of us is achingly alone, piercingly alone.

Only when we confess our confusion can we remember that he was a gift to us and we did have him.

He came to us from the creator, trailing creativity in abundance.

Despite the anguish, his life was sheathed in mother love, family love, and survived and did more than that.

He thrived with passion and compassion, humor and style. We had him whether we know who he was or did not know, he was ours and we were his.

We had him, beautiful, delighting our eyes.

His hat, aslant over his brow, and took a pose on his toes for all of us.

And we laughed and stomped our feet for him.

We were enchanted with his passion because he held nothing. He gave us all he had been given.

Today in Tokyo, beneath the Eiffel Tower, in Ghana's Black Star Square.

In Johannesburg and Pittsburgh, in Birmingham, Alabama, and Birmingham, England

We are missing Michael.

But we do know we had him, and we are the world.

Song of a Lifetime.....

Michaeljackson

Human Nature lyrics
Looking Out
Across The Night-Time
The City Winks A Sleepless Eye
Hear Her Voice
Shake My Window
Sweet Seducing Sighs

Get Me Out
Into The Night-Time
Four Walls Won't Hold Me Tonight
If This Town
Is Just An Apple
Then Let Me Take A Bite

If They Say -
Why, Why, Tell 'Em That Is Human Nature
Why, Why, Does He Do Me That Way
If They Say -
Why, Why, Tell 'Em That Is Human Nature
Why, Why, Does He Do Me That Way

Reaching Out
To Touch A Stranger
Electric Eyes Are Ev'rywhere
See That Girl
She Knows I'm Watching
She Likes The Way I Stare

If They Say -
Why, Why, Tell 'Em That Is Human Nature
Why, Why, Does He Do Me That Way
If They Say -
Why, Why, Tell 'Em That Is Human Nature
Why, Why, Does He Do Me That Way
I Like Livin' This Way
I Like Lovin' This Way

Looking Out
Across The Morning
The City's Heart Begins To Beat
Reaching Out
I Touch Her Shoulder
I'm Dreaming Of The Street

If They Say -
Why, Why, Tell 'Em That Is Human Nature
Why, Why, Does He Do Me That Way
If They Say -
Why, Why, Tell 'Em That Is Human Nature
Why, Why, Does He Do Me That Way
I Like Livin' This way....

Ain't he soooo Sweet!

Will_i_am_amd

Will.I.Am is one of my absolute favorite celebrities. He, in a way, is what I aspire to as an artist. He has used his gift as a musician to create music you can dance to in a club and also motivate and uplift the youth to get out there and vote. His award winning  "Yes We Can" video will remain one of the crucial projects created to support President Obama  that has defined our generation. His "It's a New Day," song written to celebrate Obama's win is as inspirational as it is a great song to bounce around to. I bought it the day it came out and became his friend on Myspace because I was so impressed. And let's not forget his incredible style, iconic, slick and truly his own.

Anyway today I was watching Oprah and Will.I.AM was on. In his spare time, between writing music for his solo projects, the Black Eyed Peas, his many activist projects, and working with other artists, he Deejay's for fun. He has made a lot of money the last year with his side Deejay's and in a conversation with Oprah's BFF, Gayle, he mentioned that he would love to pay tribute to his wonderful mother by helping single parents who have accomplished children but cannot send them to school. It was so sweet and wonderfully to see every time this handsome, fly music genius, got emotional talking about his beloved mother. Oprah and Gayle arranged for four young men, academically and athletically talented young men who all got accepted into college but could not afford it. Will.I.Am surprised them by announcing that he would not be sending just one boy to school but ALL FOUR! He has created his own iamscholarship fund and these boys will be the first four recipients.

I just admire people who find a way to nurture their gifts and use it in many different ways that actually brings joy and passion to their own lives but also hope to others. It's like Cesar Milan, The Dog Whisper. It is one of my favorite shows and he is one of my favorite men. He has used his gift and understanding of animals to teach others on his show and those watching. He has also saved many dogs from being killed by teaching people to understand them and train them. He has written books and though it deals with animals you can learn so many life lessons from watching his show. His calm and assertive mantra has really inspired me, though I'm still working on it.

My goal is to use my writing in many different creative and political forms. It's happening already and I feel blessed.

What will happen to their careers?

Rihanna-brown-b How will we think of Rihanna 5 years from now? Will we  remember Chris Brown 5 years from now?

Chris Brown is finally in court to start facing punishment for what happened. But as we who follow Hollywood news knows, Rihanna has not made the choice a lot of people thought or hoped she would not.  The two are back together (I was about to say back in jail). This does not surprise me whatsoever. Unfortunately, I've know many women, some beautiful, some not, who go back to abusive men who have 150 percent less good-looks and 100 percent less money and their not barely out of their teens. But I can also understand that Rihanna still loves the easy-going, playful, beautiful Brown who adored her and is completely confused and traumatized and unwilling to admit that things have changed.

No one wants to associate such attractiveness and charisma, Brown, with such ugly misdirected rage. No one wants to think of such beauty and glamour, Rihanna, experiencing and worst tolerating such treatment and I think that's why I'm so confused, conflicted and consumed by what's going to happen to them.

On ABC News and another blog two women posted comments that sums up my thoughts exactely:

Tracie Sat, Mar 7, 2009, 7:18 AM

My heart really goes out to Rihanna and Chris too. They are both so young, talented and beautiful. I am 38 years old. When I think of how much I have changed since I was their age, it really blows my mind. They have so much living, maturing and changing to do. I really wish the media and the judgmental public would back off and let them get the help and healing they need to get through this. It's not fair to expect such a young girl to lead the fight against domestic violence. Let her sort her life out without intruding. If Chris is willing to get the help he needs to change and improve who are we to say he shouldn't have that chance. They are just so young. I am glad the things I did at their age don't continue to define me today. If they did where would I be. Let's stop judging, step back and let this thing work itself out. Stay Strong Chris and Rihanna! You still have fans that love and support you, maybe not as a couple, but as individual shining stars.

Just maybe he's learned something from this incident. Just maybe he will seek counseling. Just maybe God will lay his hands on this young man and change him and his heart. Furthermore, Rihanna is 21 yrs. old and should not have the pressure of standing up for every battered woman in the world. That's too much responsibility for a young girl. Teach your own children right from wrong and let them simply be entertained by these young people not model their entire lives after them.

I was a fan of Rihanna's beauty, not her music, and a occasional fan of Chris Brown and his music. So I did not want to admit that the Brown I saw in interviews, performing on Ellen, could do such a thing. But he has. And it appears he's been even manipulative, tipping off media about their reunion and whereabouts.  The happy puppy pics of him jet skiing or whatever that little thing was, didn't help his case. I was so shocked when I saw those pics, his big wide grin that I had to laugh in pure amazement. I thought is this how we present ourselves when we're suppose to be "sadden" and seeing help? As one PR person said, it would have looked better if he was shot taking his mother to the Madea goes to Jail film. That shows him sticking with family and behavingsubdued. But clearly he either doesn't care enough even to feign remorse for long or he's confused on how to even perceive himself after doing something like that so he is trying to resort to the good-natured fun Chris in public not understanding that we don't want to see that right now.

Apparently Rihanna can tape their calls incase he threatens her etc. What kind of relationship is this? What they need to do is both seek counseling, real counseling, counseling that addresses his rage and her dependency issues. They can still talk but should stay away from each other for at least a couple months, then reunite and see if there is something worth saving.

I wish them the best of luck.

I think we all know which one is the sexiest version. Don't we ladies?

Red Heads that changed my life

In honor of my new project, my first YA novel about a feisty red head I have decided to list my favorite iconic red heads. Red heads are some of the most memorable heroines in children's literature. There is my irreverent Peppermint Patty. I love her raspy voice and bossiness. She cracks me up every time I watch a Peanuts episode. Then there is the rebellious Pipi Longstocking, an early role model for me. She dealt with loss with such panache and bravery while still capturing the innocence and imagination of a child. And who doesn't love the adorable resilient Annie? It's a hard knock life but Annie never failed to shine.

And my personal favorite: Strawberry Shortcake. I am not a fan of the new Shortcake at all. She is too tall and skinny. Her clothes are a little tomboyish. Why did they have to change this chubby piece of perfection? Funny how they subtly use  images directed towards little girls to promote this "thinner is better" falsity. Strawberries forever!!!
