VANITY FAIR: Africa Edition
Okay, I have always been more of a Vogue reader, and have dreamed of writing for Vogue ever since I was 11, though I aspire to write for Vanity Fair as well. But I have never really read a Vanity Fair issue from cover to cover. I usually just look at in for the Annie Leibovitz covers. But then a friend of mine e-mailed and told me that he would be in Vanity Fair, so I ran over to pick up an issue, and was happily surprised when I discovered the 20 different covers. I wanted them all but decided to buy the one with Iman and Alicia Keyes. As I began reading the articles, it dawned on me what a brave issue this was for Vanity Fair to do. Whether people admit it or not, many get tired of African issues, and dismiss it all together. For VF to go all out and provide such an extensive, thorough, and entirely dedicated issue to Africa, when most of its readers are definitely not of African descent, is to be applauded. Also the covers are spectacular because they tell a story in such a fascinating, unique way. Annie Leibovitz said the covers act as a chain letter; one person passing on the message of hope, struggle, success, and growth, one person and at time. Those on the cover were well selected, and represent well-known people who are are sincerely, not sensationally, making a difference in parts of Africa. But the issue is still fun, and enlightening, and empowering.
I enjoyed it so much that I decided to subscribe to Vanity Fair. So now I subscribe to Vogue, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair besides the many O magazines, Elle, Essence, New Yorker issues I buy each month. For those who have not seen all the covers I have posted all the pictures below. I hope Annie L and Vanity Fair don't mind, but I really think these are incredible photos!!
Pick up an issue if you can. Enjoy the pics!!
